The model

How SuccessionStart works

Three platforms. One integrated model. A 15-year track record behind it.

76% of Canadian small business owners plan to exit within the next decade. Only 9% have a plan.

When an owner retires without a plan, the business often closes. Jobs disappear. Community anchors vanish. The owner's life's work sells below value or not at all. This is not a future risk. It is happening right now, at scale, across every town and city in Canada.

The buyers exist. They just can't access capital.

Canada welcomes hundreds of thousands of skilled immigrants and refugees every year, many with direct experience running businesses. They arrive ready to own, not start from scratch. The only barrier is capital access. Without Canadian credit history, conventional acquisition financing is out of reach, no matter how qualified the operator.

We built the infrastructure to connect them.

SuccessionMatching.com has been connecting retiring business owners with qualified buyers for 15 years. SkilldJobs.com identifies and profiles skilled newcomers already settled in Canada. SuccessionStart Fund I provides the capital layer that makes the acquisition possible: grant funding, acquisition financing, and LP co-investment, structured around the business and the operator, not a credit score.

We train operators before they acquire.

The Toronto incubator trains candidates using search fund methodology adapted for newcomers. Candidates are matched to retiring owners who mentor and, in some cases, back them directly. Graduates are placed into co-ownership of vetted businesses. The incubator runs within a direct pipeline to 90,000+ businesses across Ontario's Business Improvement Area network.

Proof of concept

The model in action

This is not a concept. It is a process we have been running for 15 years. Here is what it looks like when it works.

Tarek
Background

Arrived in Canada in 2018 with 10 years of restaurant ownership experience

The gap

No Canadian credit history. No local capital access. Underemployed.

The match

Matched to a gallery business in Alberta through a formal succession plan. Acquired with structured financing.

The outcome

Three years later: revenue tripled. The original owners retired with their legacy intact. The community kept its business. Tarek built a future.

This is what happens when the right person meets the right business, with the right capital behind them.
